Literacy

 W.A.L.T: Synthesis ideas across texts.

A while ago, our class were given a two texts that we have read and we had to fill in the tables that each contained questions about the text. The questions were what was the problem?, what knowledge and expertise was needed and what was the solution? The main idea through out both texts were on natural disasters. Then we had to fill in another column about some of our own knowledge on a certain natural disaster. I chose 'The 2011 Tohoku Tsunami' that happened in Japan. After we had finished that we had to pick 12 key words that linked all 3 texts and then summarise it using all the 12 key words here is my synthesising chart and summary.

I found it challenging to fit the key words into a summary and explain the solution for the chart.
I enjoyed underlining the key words and listing what expertise was needed for the problem.

Building For the Future Predictions

 W.A.L.T: Make a prediction about a text.

Today we had to read Building For the Future. Before we read it we had to make some predictions. The predictions had to be about words we expect to come across, people or places we expect to read about and things we expect to learn. Then we read the text to see if our predictions were correct and we put it into a table. Here are my predictions.

I found it challenging to predict what I thought was going to happen in the text. I enjoyed colouring the words.

Growing Poem

 W.A.L.T: Create a growing poem.

In Tui Whanau we have been learning about different types of poems. Today we have been learning about growing poems. A growing poem starts with whatever topic you are writing about (it must only be one word). Then the second line will have two adjectives(describing words) about the topic. The third line will have three verbs(doing words), the fourth will have a phrase with four words and the fifth will be another phrase with 5 words. From the fifth you can do a mixture of phrases or words about the topic and each line growing by one word. We had to choose a complex topic/idea for our poem so I chose conflict. Here is my growing poem.

Conflict

Negative, Strifeful.

Arguing, Competing, Battling.

A rivalry between enemies.

Avoiding problems leads to chaos.

Conflict is inevitable, combat is

optional.

I found it most challenging to find some interesting phrases about conflict.

Have you ever written a growing poem?

Cross Country

W.A.L.T: Write about our School Cross Country.

Last week on Friday our school had cross country. We were all split into our age groups and the youngest age group would run first and then were followed by the other age groups throughout the day till after lunch. You are put in the age you were at the start of the year. I was in the ten year olds and we had to do five laps of our school course. I came 4th place out of my age group. After lunch the school got into all 4 of our house groups(Kowhai, Whero, Kakariki and Kahurangi) and each house group all competed to sound their chant the loudest. I was in Kowhai but Kahurangi won for the loudest chant.

Do you like doing cross country?

100 Word Challenge

W.A.L.T: Blog about our 100 Word Challenge.

Today we had to do this challenge where we were given five words and we had to create a writing piece only using 100 words here is my writing.

As I was washing my white sheets on a most boring morning, I knew I had forgotten something. Without hesitation I whipped out my phone from my pocket and checked what the date was on my calendar. ‘How could I have forgotten!?’ I thought to myself. ‘I’m supposed to be delivering a cake to the neighbours!’ Panic filled my head and my stomach whirled like a washing machine. Suddenly, as I looked down to my feet I merely saw a rather abnormal, minuscule creature crawling on my shoe. I raced inside and hurriedly delivered the sticky cake to the neighbours but they weren’t home...

Lemonade Scones

Today I tried a recipe for lemonade scones. To make them you need self raising flour, cream, lemonade and salt. I have never made scones before so this was quite interesting for me. The mixture was quite sloppy so I had to add extra flour. Otherwise they were great and when I took them out of the oven they had a perfect light and fluffy texture. Here is what they turned out like.

I found it most challenging to knead the dough. I most enjoyed adding in the variety of ingredients.
Have you tried or made lemonade scones before?

Maths

W.A.L.T: Blog about one of our maths tasks from this week.

Before lock down our class went into groups and we did a maths game and each group name was named after a country. How the game worked was that each group would get a bunch of cards with different numbers. One third of the cards are green and the other 2 thirds of them are yellow. The yellow cards are from 0-9 and the green are can have up to 2 digits. You need two yellow cards and add them up to make a total of one of the green cards. After you have used all of the cards and everything adds up correctly you say done. There are also gold silver and bronze places for the first 3 to finish. We then created a chart that had all the information for how much places each country won. In the first week of lock down we were given a bunch of question asking us about the chart. Here is what the graph looked like.
